PERFLUTREN PROTEIN-TYPE A MICROSPHERES (Optison) injection is an ultrasound contrast agent used with an echocardiogram (ultrasound of the heart) to improve the quality of the image of the heart. Generic injections are not available.

They need to know if you have any of these conditions: congenital heart defect liver disease lung disease such as emphysema, vasculitis or lung embolus an unusual reaction to Perflutren Protein-Type A Microspheres, albumin, blood products, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives pregnant or trying to get pregnant breast-feeding
How should this medicine be used?

Perflutren protein-type A microspheres is given by injection into a vein. It is given by a health care professional prior to or during the echocardiogram.
Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.

Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible: chest pain chills/fever difficulty breathing, wheezing or shortness of breath dizziness flushing skin rash or hives
Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome): altered taste flu-like symptoms such as fatigue injection site redness or discomfort nausea
